KID EXPLORER CAMP SWIMMING PROGRAM

The Kid Explorer Camp swimming program is the foundation and fun part of Kid Explorer Camp in the Jr. Flyer Day Camp and Multi-Sport I programs. Swimmers of all experience levels grow and develop their swim skills in an atmosphere that is safe, while encouraging them to confront developmentally-appropriate challenges and expand their comfort zone and skill set. Our experienced swimming instructors teach children water skills and strokes one step at a time and at their own pace, with an emphasis on water safety.

SWIM PROGRAM GOALS

SAFETY: maintain safety & uphold the pool rules at all times. Staff the pool with an abundance of lifeguards.
DEVELOP: help campers develop and improve their swim skills in a safe and fun environment.
FUN & CONFIDENCE: building confidence while encouraging campers to try new skills. When we accomplish this goal, swimming becomes more and more fun!

THE KID EXPLORER APPROACH TO OUR SWIMMING PROGRAM

On the first day of camp, each camper in swim instruction will be tested to determine their experience level and establish a starting point for swim instruction. Once their level has been determined, campers will then be grouped with peers with a similar skill level. We aim for a ratio of 6:1 camper to instructor during instruction. In addition, their counselors, who they are with all day, and our lifeguards are present at the pool to provide additional supervision and encouragement during the instructional period, for an overall pool ratio of 3:1. Our Aquatics Director is also there to assist our instructors with new and innovative instruction techniques and games.

KID EXPLORER SKILLS

Kid Explorer Campers will progress through a set of skills. Each skill is specifically designed to teach, develop, and improve swim strokes. The strokes at Kid Explorer Camps will focus on freestyle, combine stroke (elementary back arms with flutter kicks), elementary backstroke, backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke. When a camper completes one skill or stroke, the camper is then encouraged to move onto the next skill or stroke.

Examples of our skills for campers:

  • Blow bubbles
  • Comfortable with face in water
  • Enter & exit pool independently
  • Front and back float
  • Front and back glides with kick
  • Jump from pool edge
  • Dives

KID EXPLORER CAMP AQUATICS PROGRESS REPORTS

Each camper in swim instruction will receive a swim log for each week that they’re in camp. The swim log tracks camper’s experience over the course of the week, letting parents know which skills they’ve been working on — and can demonstrate in the neighborhood pool on the weekend!

WHAT WE DO DURING THE WEEK

Instructional swim takes place each day during the swim period. Each Monday, campers take the swim placement assessment, so that they can be placed in the appropriate group. They have swim instruction in this group Tuesday–Friday.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Swimming is not mandatory. Parents and campers can opt out of swimming or water play any and all days if they desire.
Our staff is accustomed to working with campers whose parents may wish for them to swim, but the campers do not. Through patience, positive encouragement and gradual steps, we do our best to work with all campers and their individual needs and comfort levels to get them involved in our instructional swim program.
